Joya de Nicaragua
The Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 turned out to be an absolute gem and one of those rare cigars that immediately makes you wonder why you had not discovered it sooner.
I picked up a couple while traveling through Mexico simply to sample them, and honestly — wow, what a find.
From the very first draw, the cigar delivered a wonderfully smooth and slightly sweet smoke that immediately grabbed my attention. Despite the Antaño 1970’s reputation for strength, the opening was surprisingly refined and balanced rather than overpowering. As the cigar developed, rich notes of coffee cream and cedar began to emerge, layering themselves beautifully over the cigar’s deep tobacco core.
What impressed me most was the progression of the smoke. The cigar gradually built in body and richness as it moved into the final third, eventually delivering a powerful, substantial tobacco flavor without ever becoming harsh or bitter. That balance is difficult to achieve in a stronger cigar, but the Antaño managed it beautifully. Even as the strength increased, the smoke remained creamy, smooth, and remarkably refined.
The smoke itself was thick and satisfying, coating the palate with rich flavors while maintaining a clean finish. Construction was excellent as well. The burn stayed even, the draw remained easy, and the cigar produced dense clouds of aromatic smoke throughout the experience.
This is the kind of cigar that reminds you why Joya de Nicaragua has earned such a loyal following over the years. Bold enough to satisfy experienced smokers, yet balanced enough to remain approachable and enjoyable from beginning to end.
And at roughly $7.25 for the Robusto Grande, the value here feels exceptional.
Rich, smooth, flavorful, and memorable — this one absolutely earned a place on my “buy again” list.
