Arango Sportsman
The Arango Sportsman Vanilla cigar was one of those impulse purchases that seemed like a good idea at the time — mostly because the word “Vanilla” managed to catch my attention while I was already buying a handful of what I’ll call my “real” cigars.
To be honest, the packaging did not exactly inspire confidence. It had more of a novelty-cigar appearance than something you would expect from a premium smoke, and I’ll admit I felt slightly self-conscious carrying it to the counter. Thankfully, it was buried among several more respectable purchases, which somehow made the moment feel less questionable. Funny how cigar smokers can become oddly protective of their reputations.
What intrigued me most was the way the flavoring was handled. Unlike many flavored cigars that simply sweeten the tip, the Arango Sportsman reportedly features a light vanilla flavor throughout the filler. In theory, this should create a more even and consistent flavor profile from start to finish while maintaining a longer-lasting aroma.
Unfortunately, the reality never quite lived up to the concept.
The burn itself was acceptable enough. It lit reasonably well, stayed mostly even, and produced a mild smoke throughout the experience. The vanilla aroma was definitely present, but the flavor came across as more artificial and flat than rich or creamy. Instead of delivering the warm, smooth sweetness I was hoping for, the cigar ended up tasting somewhat hollow and one-dimensional.
That is not to say it was terrible — it was certainly smokable — but it never became particularly enjoyable either. The flavor lacked the balance and refinement needed to elevate it beyond feeling like a novelty smoke.
In the end, the Arango Sportsman Vanilla felt more like a curiosity than something I would intentionally seek out again. Interesting idea, decent burn, but ultimately not a cigar I would revisit for flavor alone.
